Astrology and Love Compatibility: Understanding the basic factors about Synastry and why they are the main love indicators

Is she the right girl for me?

Will I have a relationship with him?

Do we have a good love compatibility?

Those are some of the most frequent questions that I receive from e-mails or Facebook messages sent by my subscribers or followers, but those are even the first questions asked by students, friends or other people around me when we speak about Astrology.

That’s perfectly normal, because Love is one of the columns of our lives, and it must be: it’s one of the keys to having a full life. So, even Astrology speaks about love and is able to give an incredible help in understanding love dynamics between 2 persons.

We can do this through the comparison between the 2 Birth Charts of the 2 potential partners and analyzing how their respective natal celestial bodies interact each other. This comparison and study is a particular section of the Astrological Art called “Synastry”, from the ancient greek: syn – astron = “stars united together”.

Synastry is capable to say us about what type of relation we could have with others; friendship, indifference, hostility, etc. However, as I said before, it is mainly used to understand who could be the best love partner or, why not? Even the true love of our life. Because of that, now I will show you the 2 main factors you need to analyze in understanding the level of love compatibility between 2 people.

I said compatibility and not affinity on purpose because often those 2 concepts are confused, but they are 2 completely different things. Love affinity means that 2 people are similar and have many things in common, they could have a relationship based on their similarities. But love relationships can be founded upon different factors than similarity, like complementarity, integration or sexuality.

So, when I speak about compatibility I’m speaking about all kinds of compatibility, because Astrology is capable of this level of detail.

Before going ahead, you need to keep on your mind that analyzing a single human psyche through a Natal Chart is already complex and it needs a great level of attention and accuracy. So you can understand that analyzing 2 Natal Charts together and their interaction needs at least double attention and accuracy otherwise it’s easy misunderstanding or getting wrong.

Once I underlined that advice, it’s time to discover which astrological interactions are the main signals of love compatibility between 2 persons. I will show you the 2 fundamental factors you need to know about Synastry to start understanding it.

They are:

• Factor 1: Alchemical compatibility; elemental dynamics between Zodiac Signs

• Factor 2: Venus; compatibilities created by the Planet of Love

There are even others, but those are the factors you have to give priority during the analysis of a Synastry to know which level of love compatibility and also which kind of compatibility you could have with your potential partner, so we start from here.

They are pretty articulate and deserve a one by one treatment to make them really clear.

So, let’s go in depth:

Factor 1- Alchemical Compatibility; elemental dynamics between Zodiac Signs

Alchemy and Astrology are deeply connected. The whole Astrological System is based on Alchemy and its laws, consequently, even synastry works according to those laws.

So, one of the main factors about love compatibility between 2 persons is the alchemical interaction between their Self, their Conscious, in other words, the alchemical interaction between their respective Suns, their Zodiac Signs.

The alchemical interactions are very important in Astrology, in fact, it’s fundamental understanding them to make the right interpretation about a Birth Chart because they help us to fit all the pieces together and give us the total view about all the different dynamics inside the psyche of the person we are examining.

For example:

On a Birth Chart, if we see the Sun in Leo [so Zodiac Sign Leo] and the Moon in Sagittarius, we will know that the 2 parts of the psyche they represent, the Conscious-Rationality [Sun] and the Unconscious-Emotions [Moon], are in tuning and work well together inside the personality of the person we are examining; how do we know that? Because Leo and Sagittarius are both of the same alchemical Element: Fire. So we can easily understand that those 2 Planets, Sun and Moon, fit good together because they are both on the same Element.

Well, Synastry works the same.

The alchemical dynamics between the 2 Suns [the 2 “Self”] of the possible partners,  will give us a big hint about the compatibility between their personalities and then about their possible relationship.

So, let’s understand the Alchemical dynamics between the Zodiac Signs more deeply, to understand the love compatibilities more deeply.

As you probably already know, every Zodiac Sign belongs to one of the 4 Alchemical Element: Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.

This divides the Zodiac in the 4 fundamental Triplicities:

• The Fire Triplicity:  Aries – Leo – Sagittarius

The Air Triplicity: Libra – Aquarius – Gemini

• The Water Triplicity: Cancer – Scorpius – Pisces

The Earth. Triplicity: Capricornus – Taurus – Virgo

Speaking psychologically, every Element corresponds to one of the 4 ancient psychological temperaments: Choleric, Sanguine, Melancholic and Phlegmatic.

Furthermore, each one of the Elements represents one of the 4 planes of the human psyche: Intuitive, Mental, Emotional and Sensorial.

Here are the basic psychological associations:

• Fire Signs – Choleric Temperament – The Intuitive Plane

– They are self-confident, assertive, competitive, full of energies and pride.

• Air Signs – Sanguine Temperament – The Mental Plane

They are intellectuals, refined, analytical, sociable and determined.

• Water Signs – Phlegmatic Temperament – The Emotional Plane

– They are sensitive, practical, compassionate, efficient and conservative.

• Earth Signs – Melancholic Temperament – The Sensorial Plane

– They are pragmatic, concrete, logical, responsible and hedonist.

Tradition says to us, for example, that some psychological temperaments fit good together, like the Phlegmatic and the Melancholic [Water-Earth], and other temperaments don’t; but why does is it so? How did they come to those answers?

Let’s go in depth.

In Alchemy, there are 4 Attributes and 2 States. Every Alchemical Element possesses 2 Attributes and it has a State.

The Attributes are: Hot, Dry, Wet and Cold.

The States are: Quietness and Excitement.

• Fire is Hot and Dry and it has Excitement

• Air is Hot and Wet and it has Excitement

• Water is Cold and Wet and it has Quietness

• Earth is Cold and Dry and it has Quietness

Through these pieces of information we can understand every level of compatibility between the Elements, so between the Zodiac Signs, and it means between 2 partners.

It’s easy to understand that 2 Signs of the same Element will have a good compatibility and so a good premise for a love relationship.

For example, a Capricornus person and a Virgo person share the same psychological tendencies because they are both Earth Signs, so both Cold and Dry with Quietness.

There is a good compatibility because they are in tuning, they are similar; it’s a love compatibility based on affinity.

But what happens when a Zodiac Sign meets a Sign of a different Element from his own?

Now that we know the Attributes and the States, it’s easy to find that answer.

Earth Signs and Water Signs match well together, because they are complementary; Earth is Cold and Dry and it has Quietness, Water is Cold and Wet and it has Quietness, they are both Cold and they have both the same State of Quietness. It’s easy for them creating an integration between their differences: Dry and Wet. When Earth and Water merge together they form the clay, the cement, so the love compatibility between those Signs is based on complementarity instead of affinity. It’s a different kind of compatibility, but it works very good anyway, and it’s an optimum base to build a good relationship.

This kind of compatibility, Earth-Water, involves: Capricornus, Taurus, Virgo – with – Cancer, Scorpius, Pisces.

There is the same kind of love matching between Fire Signs and Air Signs; they are complementary. Fire is Hot and Dry and it has the State of Excitement, Air is Hot and Wet and it has Excitement, they are both Hot and they have both the same State of Excitement. It’s easy for them creating an integration between their differences: Dry and Wet. When Fire and Air merge together energy explodes; Air feeds Fire and Fire kindles Air, so those Signs have a love compatibility based on complementarity instead of affinity, a great base to build a good relationship.

This kind of compatibility, Fire-Air, involves: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius – with – Libra, Aquarius, Gemini.

This complementarity law is also underlined by the fact that in Alchemy from the fusion between Water Element and Earth Element borns the alchemical Mercury, not the Planet, but the substance, that embodies the Passive Feminine Principle. That’s why all the Water Signs and all the Earth Signs are female Zodiac Signs.

At the same way, Alchemy says that from the fusion between Fire Element and Air Element borns the alchemical Sulfur, the Active Masculine Principle. And that’s why all the Fire Signs and all the Air Signs are male Zodiac Signs.

On the other hand, there is a different kind of alchemical interaction between Earth and Fire or Water and Air. A love relationship between Signs of those pair of Elements it is possible, but it is not natural and easy like for Similar Signs or Complementary Signs and it could be hard to develop and bring it to success, because there are many differences and just few points in common.

For example, Earth Signs are Cold and Dry while Fire Signs are Hot and Dry; they are both Dry and this is the only point of connection between them because their other Attributes are opposites [Earth/Cold–Fire/Hot], furthermore, even their respective States are opposites: Earth is Quiet, Fire is Excited.

They are pretty different and share just a point of connection, so their love compatibility is not so high, but there is still hope: it is possible for an Earth Sign and a Fire Sign having a great love relationship if other factors in their Natal Charts (Synastry) support and help it (like Venus, Ascendants, Houses, etc. – go ahead to more info).

This kind of compatibility, Earth-Fire, involves: Capricornus, Taurus, Virgo – with – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.

It’s the same story between Water Signs and Air Signs. Water is Cold and Wet while Air is Hot and Wet; they are both Wet and this is the only point of connection because their other Attributes are opposites [Water/Cold–Air/Hot] and so their respective States: Water is Quiet and Air is Excited.

A love relationship between Water Signs and Air Signs is possible, but it could be hard to develop if other factors don’t help this Synastry.

This kind of compatibility, Water-Air, involves: Cancer, Scorpius, Pisces – with – Libra, Aquarius, Gemini.

Closing, there is the alchemical dynamic between opposite Elements, Earth–Air and Fire–Water, and now you will see why it creates the lowest love compatibility.

Earth Signs are Cold and Dry and they have Quietness, while Air Signs are Hot and Wet and have Excitement; they are totally opposites, there is no point of connection or something they can share. It’s a weak base to create a good and durable relationship, it can be really hard. Earth and Air can attract each other, often with a sort of magnetic attraction just because of their opposite psyches, but it’s a passional attraction that could create a “stormy relationship” or a brief love story more based on eros and sex than a true love feeling.

Of course, it’s the same dynamic for Fire Signs and Water Signs. Fire is Hot and Dry and it has Excitement while Water is Cold and Wet and it has Quietness: they are complete opposites, and, like for Earth and Air, it’s hard having a good love compatibility.

You can see better all those alchemical dynamics in the following imagine:

Anyway, always remember that those are the general alchemical dynamics and that you have to look at the whole Synastry to understand the real compatibility between the persons involved. Other strong factors on the Natal Charts can favor a great relationship or a good marriage even between 2 Zodiac Signs of opposites Elements.

For example, a Sagittarius man [Fire Sign] can have a great attraction and love compatibility with a Scorpius lady [Water Sign] if he has Venus in Scorpius in his own Birth Chart, because Venus is the planet of love (see the next point for more info).

This is just one case of many possible others, but I used it to underline the concept that studying synastry between 2 people can be complex and the alchemical dynamics are just the general base to start understanding it.

Also, this helps me to introduce the main love compatibility factor no. 2.

Factor 2 – Venus; compatibilities created by the Planet of love

In a Birth Chart, Planet Venus represents that part of the human psyche where our eros, romance, pleasure, prosperity, ideals, and sense of beauty are. It means that it is also the place of our feelings, our capacity for love, our need for love and, above all, our way to love.

It expresses our way to relate to others and, consequently, the base to create an emotional connection and a real bond with someone else, especially with a love partner. So, in a Synastry the interactions that involve Venus can be a great indicator of love compatibility.

I’ve already mentioned on the previous point about the natural attraction for the Zodiac Sign where our natal Venus is, namely: if your natal Venus is in Scorpio this creates a good love affinity with a Scorpio person, simply because your “eros” is “scorpionic” and your “scorpionic way to love” matches well with the Self [Sun] of a Scorpio person.

This happens even if the natal Venus is not on the same degrees of the natal Sun of the potential partner. Example: If a male Gemini has his natal Venus in Cancer at 5º 15’ 24’’, while his potential partner, a Cancer lady, has her natal Sun in Cancer at 22º 18’ 13’’ , so more then 17 degrees distant, this situation is already enough to create a good compatibility between the 2 persons.

But this factor becomes even stronger when there is the Conjunction between the natal Venus and the natal Sun of the potential partner, namely, when those 2 Planets are on the same degrees of a Zodiac Sign. It’s a compatibility based on affinity, just because the Sun person recognizes a piece of himself inside the partner, and the Venus person adores the Sun person because corresponds to everything she loves.

Furthermore, on a male Natal Chart planet Venus can indicate even the image of femininity, because, speaking psychologically, Venus is part of the “female side” of a man (together with the Moon). So, using my previous example, a Cancer girl can easily embody the “how a girl should be” according to that Gemini guy, making this synastric aspect very powerful.

Going on, there are other Conjunctions that involve Venus which are a good indicator of love compatibility.

When the natal Venus is in Conjunction with the natal Mars of the potential partner there is a great compatibility, because of the big erotic energy created by this Aspect. It’s a compatibility based on complementarity instead of affinity like the previous one. This Aspect lives of sexuality above all, because Venus and Mars are the 2 main sexual Planets on the Birth Chart and then in the human psyche.

Venus represents the romantic sexuality, the preliminaries, the sweet attentions, the slow pleasure of making love; instead, Mars is the passional sexuality, the rough energy, the pure instincts, the beastly side of sex. When 2 potential partners have these 2 Planets in Conjunction, the attraction is powerful and the different energies exchange makes them very good lovers despite their opposite natures.

In the myth, from the union between goddess Venus and god Mars born the goddess Armonia, literally “Harmony”, capable of perfectly integrating the 2 opposite poles to find a balance. It’s one of the best foundations to create a wonderful relationship.

Even the Conjunction between the 2 natal Venuses of the potential partners is a signal of good compatibility, in this case, based on tuning, so affinity. The persons involved in this Aspect often share same interests and hobbies but also ideals. There is a lot of spiritual affinities and a great amount of romance and sweetness; there’s a weird dream-like atmosphere and will for tenderness. This could lead to a more platonic oriented relationship where sex is a secondary aspect despite both partners have same sexual tastes.

Another powerful synastric Conjunction is between Venus and Jupiter, because of their temperate and prosperous nature. Speaking alchemically, Venus is Hot and Wet, but more Wet than Hot because of its closeness to the Moon (source of Humid), Jupiter is even Hot and Wet, but more Hot than Wet because of its greatness; they are very similar but also compensate each other to create a perfect and wonderful balance.

This potential couple shares the same values and this gives a solid base to build a stable relationship, especially because of the great honesty, respect and sincere feelings between them.

Jupiter is a Social Planet, and its influence makes the partners dynamics about social life; They like showing themselves at parties, events, aperitifs, gala, dinners, etc. The Venus person particularly likes the way he feels in those social situations when he is next to the Jupiter person.

This Conjunction is very often a signal of true love, it can be an indicator of a long, stable, and satisfying love story.

Going ahead, we find that Venus conjunct with the Lunar Nodes of the potential partner is another strong signal of love compatibility, but with particular characteristics. Lunar Nodes in the personal Natal Chart have the meaning of something related to what is commonly called “karma”, namely, something that speaks about the past of our Soul and consequently even about where it will go.

Personally, I don’t like so much the definition “karmic astrology”, not because it is wrong in its basic meanings, but because it’s a bit an oversimplification and recall exotic concepts related to the Hindu religion, the RG Veda, the Baghavad Gita and others oriental holy doctrines. Nothing wrong with them, they are full of wisdom and wonderful knowledge, but they are too often misunderstood by western people and could seem “distant” for some people who don’t have any familiarity with them. Because, yes, it’s true, they are far from the western traditions and use other different languages from ours.

The truth is that we have our proper western esoteric Traditions which speak about the same concepts but using closest languages to our cultural heritage (but to be clear: Western Tradition or Oriental Tradition = different languages to say the same Truths – ).

The issue is that, unfortunately, we western people forgot our roots and where we come from. The ideas of past lives or reincarnation of the Soul are part of that concept called  Metempsychosis – which is one of the cosmological foundations of the Orphic Mysteries, to say an example, but even the cosmological foundation of the schools of Pythagoras, Empedocles and Plato naturally, which are the base of the whole western Tradition, and then connected even to Astrology.

So, to be short here, the 2 Lunar Nodes form the axis of Ananke, the Necessity, the innate inner need of the Soul incarnated, its sacred necessity, its “mission”.

The South Node is called Catabibazon [ancient greek: “which descends”], and it represents the past memories, experiences, and burdens that the Soul brings from its previous path. The North Node is called Anabibazon [ancient greek: “which ascends”] and it represents the next steps of the path, the pole to integrate, what the Soul would need to evolve.

They are the poles of the axis of this existence established by Ananke, guarded by her celestial snake\dragon; in fact, in latin Catabibazon is also called Cauda Draconis [Dragon’s tail] and Anabibazon is called Caput Draconis [Dragon’s head].

So you can easily understand that when Venus, the planet of love, is conjunct with one of the Nodes of another person, this can indicate a bond which transcends time or, in any case, a type of relationship that gives us something we need.

Venus in conjunction with Catabibazon indicates 2 Souls already met during their past path. It could mean that they are strongly connected and they share a true love which transcends a single existence. Anyway, pay attention, because this is not for sure. This Aspect could mean even that there are “suspended affairs” to resolve between the 2 lovers, especially for the Catabibazon person.

Another meaning of this Conjunction could be about a trial, a sort of temptation from the past love which tries to bring back the Catabibazon person who would need to overcome it forever.

In any case, when Venus and Catabibazon are in Conjunction in Synastry the attraction is real, but we need to analyze deeply the whole picture to really understand what this Aspect say to us.

On the other hand, when the natal Venus is conjunct with the natal Anabibazon of a potential partner it can indicate a love relationship that never happened in past, despite the 2 Souls have already touched each other during their previous path, and now there is an opportunity to live this love in this existence.

Furthermore, this Aspect could indicate the type of relationship or partner that we need to evolve, as individuals, but also as lovers; about our attitude to love and to be loved in return, about our attitude to be part of a couple and makes it work. This is true especially for the Anabibazon person.

There is a lot of attraction here, but generally the Anabibazon person is more involved than the Venus person.

Well, those are the main Conjunctions of Venus able to be the best indicators of love compatibility in Synastry. Of course, there are others, and there are even the interactions of Venus with the Astrological Houses of the potential partner, but we need more time for that; I cannot put everything here even because it would become overwhelming.

Anyway, closing, I just want to speak at least about the interaction of Venus and the 7th House, because it deserves full attention as a strong signal of love compatibility.

So, when the natal Venus is in Conjunction with the 7th Astrological House (or also inside of it) of the potential partner can be one of the best love indicator or EVEN an indicator of marriage. I’ve underlined the word “even” because very often amateurs and beginners think that the 7th House is the House of Marriage, but this is not exact, not completely. The 7th Astrological House is the House of Relations, of any kind of relation, because the Descendant [Falling Sign – 7th House] represents how we see and perceive the World, the external context, and this involves even every other Self different from ours. It’s the place where – I – meets – you – , so It’s the place that regulates our personal attitude toward the relations; friendships, business, hostility and even love relationships of course.

Because of that, when Venus, the Planet about the art of creating harmonic bonds with other people and about the value we give to them, encounters the 7th House of a potential partner, the result is an amazing premise for a great, long and satisfying relationship.

The Venus person stimulates the 7th House person in a natural and deep way, while the House person is particularly sensitive to the energy of that Venus and feels a natural familiarity with this person. The 7th House person wishes to receive an sustain the Venus person and the Venus person loves the way it makes he feels. With this synastric Aspect, it’s easy to create an intimate connection in a very natural way. It’s that kind of relationship where there is no need for words to understand each other.

Very often this creates a couple with a lot of complicity and no tensions. All of this gives more romance than passion between the potential partners, but this is not bad; they make love, they don’t have sex, if you understand what I intend.

As I said before, this Aspect works good even when the natal Venus is inside the sector of the influence of the 7th House of the partner, but it expresses itself at its best and powerfully when there is the true Conjunction between the natal Venus and the Cusp of the partner’s 7th House. Always remember that the Cusps are the true core of the Astrological Houses.

It’s easy to understand why this synastric Aspect, Venus-7th House, is considered one of the best indicator for marriage, but remember that I gave you the general vision of this compatibility. We always need to look at the whole big picture of the interactions between the 2 Natal Charts to understand their true compatibility, because it could be even something in there that disturbs what superficially seems a wonderful factor of love compatibility.

Just an example to understand. If there is the Conjunction between the natal Venus and the 7th House of the partner, but the natal Venus is even disturbed by some hard synastric Aspect like: natal Saturn of the partner Square Venus; the level of love compatibility can be reduced by this, making the “Venus-7th House factor” still active and source of attraction, but perhaps unable in sustaining a fully satisfying relationship.

Conclusions.

Now you can easily identify the main indicators of love compatibility, understanding even the type and level of compatibility and consequently which direction could have your potential relationship. You can move your first steps in the world of Synastry, just remember, as I said at the beginning, to be very scrupulous.

I suggest attempting a deep study of Synastry after you acquired an advanced knowledge of natal Astrology, which remains the foundation of the entire system. A solid base of astrological laws is indispensable to avoid superficial interpretations and misjudgements about relational Astrology especially.
