The internet is clogged with bad advice and misconceptions on Aspects.
If you were to understand your natal Aspects just using advice you found by Googling around, you’d end up with a wonderful collection of superficial “ready-made” interpretations that will never fit for your individual case (because we are individuals and not “cookie-cutter dolls”), a large bunch of misconceptions that scare you about that “dark evil Square” in your chart, and even more questions and doubts than before.  

Why does this bad advice live on?

The reason is that, underneath all of it, there are several common “Aspects myths” that shape how most people think about Aspects.
These myths are misguided at best, and destructive at worst.

I’ve had conversations with numerous astrology experts, people who have been studying this art for years, and often, when discussing Aspect interpretations with them, I’ve encountered at least one of these myths (and from many of them, all of them).

(By the way, the reason I know about these myths is that I believed them – until I finally questioned them to see if they were true.)

I want to point these myths out to you today. Even if this is the only thing you take away from me today, you’ll be much better equipped for your next chart reading.

Here are the 4 “Aspects Myths” you need to drop ASAP…

Aspects Myth no. 1: “I want to know my Houses first!”

This is an extremely common thing, especially among amateurs, but unfortunately, I’ve seen professionals do it too. When analyzing a birth chart, right after assessing the placement of the Planets, there’s a direct transition into interpreting the astrological Houses.

I’ll be very straightforward: During the analysis of a birth chart, the Houses are interpreted AFTER the Aspects.

There’s a specific order to follow during the analysis of a birth chart, and it is: Planets -> Aspects -> Houses.

This order isn’t arbitrary; it has a precise logic. If you move to the Houses before analyzing the Aspects, you’re making a mistake for two reasons:

1 – You don’t yet have a complete and accurate interpretation of your Planets because Aspects significantly influence the Planets.

If you simply interpret, for example, your ‘Mercury in Leo,’ it’s not enough to understand how Mercury expresses its psychological influences in your chart.
By observing the Aspects, you’ll realize that Mercury is also in Sextile with Saturn and in Opposition with Neptune, and these two factors must be considered to interpret Mercury. Otherwise, you’ll only have an incomplete interpretation of your Mercury or, worse, an incorrect interpretation.

2 – As a consequence of the first point, since without the Aspects you lack the complete and accurate understanding of the psychological meanings of the Planets in your Chart, you’ll also make mistaken interpretations about your Houses.

It’s a logical consequence: if your “Mercury in Leo” is in the Fourth House, but you haven’t first analyzed its Aspects, you won’t even obtain the correct interpretation of how Mercury influences your Fourth House.
You might think you know everything about your Fourth House, but it’s not the case. And what’s worse, when you later realize that Mercury has Aspects with Saturn and Neptune, not only will you have to start over from scratch, but you’ll have wasted a lot of time and created unnecessary confusion in your mind.

Aspects Myth no.2: – “There are good Aspects and bad Aspects!”  

Thinking in absolutes is always, ALWAYS, a mistake. Absolute concepts like “good” and “bad” used to define an entire branch of Astrological Art, such as the study of Aspects, stem solely from the need of the most ignorant, lazy, and superficial individuals to oversimplify what they don’t want (or can’t) deeply understand.

In fact, there are no inherently “good” or “bad” Aspects in your chart. Instead, there are simply harmonious interactions and less harmonious interactions, or challenging interactions and very complex interactions. Believing that aspects like the Trine and Sextile are like “blessings”, while Oppositions and Squares are like “curses” in your life, is profoundly mistaken and detrimental to yourself.

Two planets could, in fact, collaborate harmoniously to create effects that are not entirely desirable in your life. On the other hand, their tumultuous interaction might generate inner tension within you, which if released, could trigger your evolutionary potential.

Knowledge is power, and indeed, possessing the correct and profound understanding of Aspects is the only thing that empowers you to manage the psychological dynamics expressed by Aspects in your inner world with awareness, calm, and confidence.

Aspects Myth no.3: – “There are Major Aspects and Minor Aspects!”

We can certainly classify Aspects in various ways: Harmonious, neutral, and dynamic, or waxing and waning, but categorizing them as Major or Minor would definitely be a mistake.

However, this is one of the most persistent myths.

This misconception primarily leads to two fundamentally wrong practices when it comes to interpreting Aspects:

The first is considering certain Aspects, such as the Semi-sextile or the Quincunx, as negligible in the framework of a person’s psyche simply because they are mistakenly deemed -minor- compared to an Opposition or a Conjunction.

The second is believing that a Trine and a Sextile, for instance, have the same psychological significance and that the Trine, being -major-, is “stronger” while the Sextile is a “weaker” Aspect.

All of this stems from an arbitrary and approximate interpretation of the texts left by Claudius Ptolemy, considered the “father” of Astrology (although in truth, he mainly compiled all available astrological knowledge of the first century in his books). However, Ptolemy never explicitly divides Aspects into major and minor.

My extensive experience in interpreting natal charts can confirm that often a Quincunx can hold the same importance as an Opposition, especially if it involves one of the two Luminaries, or a Semi-sextile can be more significant than a Conjunction when identifying the triggering cause of certain personality traits.

Likewise, major or minor doesn’t refer to the difference in strength between a Square and an Opposition or between a Trine and a Sextile.

A Square and an Opposition each represent specific psychological mechanisms, distinct and separate from one another.

Reducing everything to “Opposition is a challenging interaction” while “Square is a less challenging interaction” is entirely wrong. Consequently, it will only lead you to make incorrect or superficial interpretations, preventing you from understanding clearly why you are the way you are.

Aspects Myth no.4: “Aspects are too complicated and confusing!”

When you first approach Aspects, they seem quite complex, partly due to the fact that you have to deal with a bit of numbers, geometry, and astronomy.

At least, that was certainly my initial impression when I first attempted to understand Aspects.

I’m not particularly fond of numbers and math, yet studying Aspects required me to grapple with degrees, angles, tolerances, orbital speeds, and other numerical concepts.

However, what I came to realize very clearly later on is that anything, even the simplest thing, appears overly complicated and confusing if presented in the wrong way.

The point is that many experts skip over the mathematical and astronomical factors of Aspects, focusing solely on their meanings in the birth chart.

The problem is that to truly understand the psychological meanings expressed by Aspects, having at least a foundational understanding of the geometry, astronomy, and cosmology that underlie them is not just useful, it’s essential.

This is why when experts try to teach Aspect interpretation to others, their explanations can come across as overly elaborate, convoluted, repetitive, and contradictory.
This can leave students with the impression that Aspects are an extremely complex topic that requires an incredibly advanced level of knowledge and many years of study and experience.

The reality, of course, is not like this.
Aspects become much simpler to comprehend when you first understand the “why” behind their existence and their nature.

There’s a saying that goes, – “If you can’t explain a concept in a single sentence, it means you haven’t truly understood it”- .

Well, this is very true when studying Aspects.
The truth is that many experts haven’t truly grasped Aspects themselves, so when they try to explain them to others, they often launch into a long convoluted and smoky monologue to try to fill in the gaps in their own knowledge.

All of this, combined with the various misconceptions I’ve already talked about, contributes to making the study of Aspects seem overly complicated, or even making you feel inadequate because you can’t quite grasp how to interpret them correctly.

The accurate and concise presentation of the foundational concepts behind Aspects makes all the difference in their understanding.
Once you achieve that, Aspects will appear as a simple and logical consequence of everything you already know about Astrology, and you’ll start using them in an easier and natural way.

This is how the interpretation of Aspects should work:

Once you have permanently discarded all those “Aspects myths”, you will be ready to approach the analysis of your Aspects correctly, focusing on the right factors to consider.
By doing so, you can finally make significant strides on your journey of self-discovery.

Here’s how you should approach the analysis of your Aspects instead:

• Factor 1: – You must ensure you’re using the right Orbs for calculating your Aspects.

The concept of an “orb” is essential for accurately calculating Aspects and determining if they truly form in your birth chart.

Even though many online birth chart calculators automatically compute Aspects, I can assure you that they often default to using orbs that are too approximate or even incorrect.

It’s crucial, therefore, to know and understand the correct orbs to use for calculating your Aspects.
Otherwise, you might mistakenly believe you have a Sextile that you actually don’t or a Square that doesn’t really exist.

This is where knowing the cosmology and orbital motions of the Planets makes all the difference.

It’s the only way to be certain about how to use orbs and which ones are correct for each Aspect.

• Factor 2: – You must identify which of the two Planets involved in the Aspect is the one “forming” the Aspect, in other words, the dominating Planet.

Many people believe that the two Planets in Aspect should be treated as “equal partners” when it comes to understanding how it influences your psyche. However, this is not accurate.

For instance, if you have a Trine between Saturn and the Sun, the worst thing you can do is think that to interpret this Trine, you need to “blend” the respective meanings of Saturn and the Sun in a 50-50 ratio.
That’s not the case. One of the two Planets “forms” the Aspect, meaning it causes it, and this puts it in a dominant position in relation to the other Planet.

Knowing which of the two, the Sun or Saturn, is causing the Aspect will radically shift your perspective on that Trine.
It will be much simpler to understand how to interpret it and see the actual effects it has on your personality.

Once again, having a grasp of the astronomy underlying Aspects will be crucial for this.

• Factor 3: – You must calculate the intensity of the Aspect.

Earlier, I mentioned that you don’t interpret Aspects by classifying them as strong or weak, and that’s absolutely true when it comes to distinguishing between a Square and an Opposition, or a Trine and a Sextile.
However, Aspects do possess their own specific intensity.

A Square, for instance, can be strong or weak, and a Sextile can be mildly intense or very intense. This means that Aspects can be very prominent or less noticeable within the framework of your personality; they can persist strongly or less strongly in your life based on their specific intensity.

Once again, understanding the astronomical mechanisms behind Aspect calculation will be crucial for determining how intense your Aspect is.

• Factor 4: – You must identify which Aspects are waxing and which are waning.

I bet you’re immediately ready to categorize your Aspects as good or bad, harmonious or discordant, but have you ever considered understanding which of your Aspects are crescent and which are waning?

Although it might seem like a trivial detail at first glance, this information can actually prove to be quite important for accurately defining the current state of your inner psychological landscape.

• Factor 5: – You need a crystal clear understanding of the differences between each Aspects.

What’s the difference between an Opposition and a Quincunx?
Do the Sextile and the Semi-sextile have the same meanings with just differing degrees of strength?
If the Trine and the Sextile are both harmonious Aspects, do they have the same effects on the human psyche?

I’m sure these and many other questions and uncertainties are swirling around in your mind when you try to interpret your Aspects. However, the only way to deeply comprehend the psychological consequences that Aspects hold in your birth chart is to precisely and clearly understand the psychological mechanisms that each Aspect triggers within your personality.

Until you have a crystal-clear vision of the differences between individual Aspects, you’ll always be plagued by doubts and uncertainties about their meaning in your birth chart. Consequently, you’ll never attain a clear understanding of who you truly are and why you behave the way you do.

Only by understanding the “whys” behind Aspects can you definitively and without uncertainty grasp the specific psychological mechanisms that each Aspect embodies.

The Sextile is a harmonious relationship, but why? And why exactly 60 degrees, and not, for instance, 83 degrees?

Esoteric cosmology, Sacred Geometry, esoteric Astronomy – this is the knowledge that allows you to confidently answer questions like these and all others that come to mind.

Without that knowledge, you’ll never deeply understand yourself by studying your Aspects.
