Enough with cookie-cutter profiles
The problem is that almost all content dedicated to the Zodiac Signs primarily follows one approach: they only provide profiles like what an Aries is like, what a Taurus is like, what a Gemini is like, what a Cancer is like, and so on.
Unfortunately, this is the wrong approach to studying them, even for beginners, and here are two fundamental reasons why:
- These profiles only illustrate the characteristics of the “Sun Sign,” meaning they show you the main traits of each Zodiac sign as if it were your Sun Sign, which is where your Sun is located. However, other planets (Moon, Mars, Venus, Saturn, etc.) will be placed in a specific sign, and you won’t know how to interpret them because you only know the meanings related to the Sun in a sign.
- This approach requires you to memorize dozens and dozens of meanings associated with the Signs without truly understanding why they have those meanings. Therefore, you won’t be able to skillfully and confidently interpret your birth chart because it presents unique configurations that require critical thinking rather than memorizing information others have pre-packaged summarily and approximately.
My approach to studying the Zodiac Signs is entirely different. It focuses on helping you understand the profound symbolism underlying each Sign and encourages you to use that symbolism to think independently and arrive at accurate answers.
In this way, when you encounter a “Saturn in Taurus,” you won’t need to try to recall the Taurus profile you read in that book about signs two years ago because you will have a clear understanding of what Taurus is and what psychological forces it represents.

You need depth
To achieve this result, one crucial factor is necessary: depth.
You must delve deep into the symbolism associated with the Zodiac Signs and then translate it into equally deep psychological meanings.
Let’s consider a practical example. In almost any book about the Signs, when you reach Cancer, the only things you’ll be told are that Cancer loves home and family and is essentially a shy and sensitive person. Often, many unnecessary words and superfluous embellishments are used to say the same thing, but essentially, you’re only getting that.
It should be noted that these basic concepts aren’t even incorrect, but the problems are that:
- When you need to understand the meanings of a planet in Cancer in your birth chart, you’ll realize that those pieces of information are practically useless, and you won’t have the faintest idea of what to do.
- There’s a multitude of other necessary information to know about Cancer, what it represents, and why it “loves home and family,” because each Sign is like a boundless universe of symbols in itself.
For example, Cancer also represents the Soul’s first contact with the material world: it’s the Sign in which the human soul incarnates to experience the physical dimension.
The Zodiac, viewed as a whole, allows for various levels of interpretation, one of which is the representation of the human soul’s journey from a spiritual perspective.
The first 4 Signs of the Zodiac indeed represent the origin and descent of the human soul from the spiritual plane to the material one.
Aries represents the first manifestation of the masculine principle, Taurus represents the first manifestation of the feminine principle, Gemini represents the encounter and alliance of the two principles, and Cancer finally represents the fruit of the union of the two principles: the soul leaving the spiritual plane and becoming flesh.
This is perfectly illustrated by the symbolism associated with the crab, the archetypal image of Cancer.
The crab is an animal with a shell, and esoterically, the image of the empty shell being filled by a living being represents the body being filled by the inhabiting soul.
The shell also evokes the concept of refuge, which leads us to the idea of “home” as a refuge, protection, and safety.
But in the symbolism of the soul descending from the spiritual plane to inhabit a physical shell, we can see how Cancer is the Sign of firsts.
Being the first contact of our spiritual essence with the material plane, it is related to first experiences and, especially, the emotions experienced during those initial experiences, emotions that leave an indelible mark because they are amplified by their novelty.
Therefore, Cancer is associated with memory, especially emotional memory.
That’s why, for example, when you interpret your Venus in Cancer in your natal chart, knowing this symbolism will help you deduce that this placement makes you connected to past loves, the emotions felt during your first sexual experiences, and a perpetual search for those intense emotions you experienced the first time you kissed someone, the first time you took a trip with a loved one, or the first time you built a bond with a romantic partner.
It can also mean that if you have had any past traumas related to romantic relationships, you might struggle to overcome them and move on because Cancer indicates a particular attachment to the past and, therefore, a difficulty in letting go.
It’s knowing every single aspect of the deep symbolism associated with Cancer, in this case, that allows us to make more nuanced, refined, and, above all, deeper interpretations of who you are, why you are the way you are, or why you “function” in a certain way. And all of this will not only help you understand and know yourself better but also accept yourself, recognize the “divine design” within you, and subsequently use this information to improve yourself.
